When Claudia Cano opened the Guaca Maya
Mexican Restaurant in 1996 she knew, she and Juan Manuel Robles were
entering into a difficult business that already offered challenges.
They were locating in South Omaha, home to many of Omaha’s best
restaurants, their building already had a reputation for fine food,
and they had little more than each other to start with.
They also knew they had something
special to offer their customers, and together they could make their
dreams come true. Nine years, a wedding, two daughters, a lot of
hard work and long hours later, they moved Guaca Maya to a much
bigger building. Year 10 brought yet another blessing, a son.
The move to 5002 South 33rd Street
was more than a change in location. It was the culmination of their
goals and dreams. Now, not only can they serve their customers the
finest in authentic Mexican food, dish up an unmatched assortment of
Mexican seafood, lay out a buffet fit for a royal banquet, and
accommodate groups of two to two hundred, they can almost convince
everyone that comes through the door, they actually are in Mexico.
As you enter, it is as if you have
strolled into a village not far from the Mexican coast. Sparkling
star like lights tell you it is dust no matter what time it is. As
you are greeted by a colorfully and traditionally dressed senorita,
you hear the music in the air, and note the smell of fresh tortillas
and warm spices. You take a seat by the fountain in the plaza, and
marvel at the sights around you. There is the grill and the señora
busy pressing and stacking fresh tortillas, across the way is the
brightly lit and well stocked Canteena and just beyond that four
pool tables ready to test your skills.
On Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday nights from 9 PM to 1 AM the dance floor is alive with
lights, and dancers moving to the music of a live band from Chicago,
California, or Mexico. Or will it be DJ El Gato? No matter, the
music is loud, the spirit is light, and dance floor is calling.
